Today, Sweden can be awarded the 2029 European Football Championship. Kosovare Asllani is keeping her fingers crossed – even though she herself won't be playing for that long. I've been lucky enough to experience it, and it's magical, says the national team captain.

This afternoon, the European Football Association (Uefa) will announce which country or countries will be awarded the hosting rights for the 2029 Women's European Championship.

Sweden and Denmark have a joint application, Germany and Poland each have one.

The Swedish national team is not unexpectedly hoping for a Nordic victory in that battle.

It would have been something out of the ordinary, something you've dreamed of. It's a golden opportunity to get it now, says Chelsea winger Johanna Rytting Kaneryd.

Last happened in 2013

The 28-year-old could very well be part of a Swedish national team even then. For Sweden's captain Kosovare Asllani, the European Championship in almost four years is out of the question, says the 36-year-old midfield star. But she would like to see a Swedish-Danish arrangement for the sake of her national team mates.

She herself played in the European Championship in Sweden in 2013.

"That would be huge. I've been lucky enough to experience it once in my career and it's magical. I really wish everyone could experience it," says Asllani.

But then I'll cheer from the sidelines. I'll be the biggest supporter.

If so, she may see players like Evelyn Ijeh and Rosa Kafaji – both scorers in Tuesday's Nations League match against France in Stockholm – represent Sweden in front of the home crowd.

It would be really great to play there. I haven't played any championships for Sweden yet. And it would be great to have our supporters with us in all the matches, it would have meant so much, says Kafaji.

“It would mean an incredible amount”

Another person who sincerely hopes for a European Championship on Swedish soil is Sweden's national team captain Tony Gustavsson. He remembers how awesome it was when, as national team captain of the Australian national team, he got to lead the team during the World Cup in Australia in 2023.

I have had the privilege of being able to play in a championship in a nation that has it on home soil and it would mean so much, not only for this national team but for football in this country in general, says Gustavsson.

Not least with the experiences we would have together with the Swedish fans. Not to mention money and investments, understand what it could do to infrastructure and other things in Swedish football, says Gustavsson.
