December 2025: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) began an operation in Minneapolis and the neighboring city of Saint Paul. Several people were arrested.
January 6, 2026:
Efforts were stepped up in the state of Minnesota against migrants who were in the United States illegally. Around 2,000 ICE agents were then in the state. Large protests were held against the immigration police's efforts.
January 7:
Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three and a U.S. citizen, was shot and killed by an ICE agent while in a car in Minneapolis. Both Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey sharply criticized ICE for its actions. However, President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the shooting, saying the ICE agent acted in self-defense. Since the shooting of Renee Good, daily protests against immigration enforcement have been held in Minneapolis and Saint Paul.
January 9:
ICE bolstered its efforts by deploying 200 additional federal agents to Minnesota.
January 12:
The state of Minnesota and the twin cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul sued the U.S. government to try to stop ICE operations in the state.
January 14:
A Venezuelan man was shot in the leg in Minneapolis after two men attacked ICE agents with shovels during a raid, authorities said.
January 21:
A five-year-old boy was arrested along with his father in the driveway of the family's home in the Minneapolis area. The boy had just come home from school.
January 23:
About 100 priests were arrested at a demonstration against ICE at Minnesota's largest airport.
January 24:
Another fatal shooting occurred in Minneapolis. Images showed ICE agents firing multiple shots at a man who was first wrestled to a sidewalk. According to Police Chief Brian O'Hara, it was a 37-year-old American citizen who lived in the city with no known criminal history who was shot to death.
