US President Donald Trump says the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to lay down their arms after recent fighting on the border.

Trump writes on Truth Social that he has held talks with the prime ministers of both countries and that they agree to end the fighting as early as this evening, Friday, and return to the short-lived ceasefire that Trump helped negotiate in October.

"Both countries are ready for peace and continued trade with the United States," he writes.

Earlier on Friday, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul reported on the conversation with Trump, but did not mention anything about Thailand agreeing to stop fighting.

The unrest has been ongoing since May, when fighting broke out after deadly gunfire on the border. The weapons were first laid down in August, a second time in October, but fighting has been ongoing since November.

Hundreds of thousands of civilians have been forced to leave their homes.

Both sides accuse each other of reviving the feud over the 800-mile-long border.
