The government wants to give municipalities increased opportunities to check criminal records, among other things, when hiring in areas such as healthcare and social care.

"It's about giving municipalities tools to prevent people with criminal or disloyal intentions from being employed," says Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) in a written comment to TT.

For people who are to be employed in, for example, home care and personal assistance, municipalities should be able to request to see extracts from the criminal record and the suspect register - the police's list of people who are reasonably suspected of crimes or have been requested to be extradited.

Furthermore, it is proposed that stricter checks be carried out on those who are to be employed to work with children, to include the suspect register in addition to the criminal record.

Finally, people who are candidates for managerial or other key positions should be able to be checked against their criminal records.

According to Strömmer, the proposals are “important in the fight against organized crime.”

"But the proposals are also important for increasing security and reducing the risk of people being exposed to crime within municipal activities - older people who are in need of support from welfare should be able to feel safe when, for example, home care staff are allowed into their home," writes the Minister of Justice.

The legislative amendments are proposed to come into force on March 1 next year.
