Sebastien Ogier took his ninth overall victory in the World Rally Championship and equaled compatriot Sebastien Loeb's record.

The historic title was secured in the Saudi World Rally Championship where the 41-year-old finished third, thus deciding the battle against his Toyota teammate, Elfyn Evans.

"What an incredible season. The fight with Elfyn has been absolutely superb. There are no great champions without great rivals," said Ogier, who won six rallies during the season.

Ogier's nine titles have come with three different teams. He took the first of four with Volkswagen in 2013, then two with Ford (2017 and 18) and now his third with Toyota (2020, 21 and 25).

Elfyn Evans led by three points heading into the final World Rally Championship, but a puncture on Friday dashed his hopes of victory. He finished sixth.

Thierry Neuville, Belgium, won the rally and Oliver Solberg – who next season received a top-class factory contract with Toyota – finished in tenth place.

Solberg secured the title in WRC2, the second highest class, in September.
