The Danish Bornholm "energy island" is one of eight energy projects that the EU wants to invest heavily in a new grid package.

Wednesday's package is intended to speed up permit processes and coordinate planning for cross-border energy pipelines.

Not least, it is about better connecting France and Spain, after the extensive Spanish power outages this spring.

"I don't think I'm offending anyone by saying that France has sometimes been a little reluctant to more interconnections," says EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen at a press conference in Brussels together with his colleague Teresa Ribera.

In the package, the EU Commission identifies eight “energy highways” that it wants to accelerate. In addition to the connection to the Iberian Peninsula, the project includes an electricity pipeline to Cyprus, the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, and the Bornholm energy island, which will carry wind power to Germany and the Danish mainland.
