The Defense: Yoon did not stage a coup

South Korea's now suspended president Yoon Suk-Yeol did not instigate a rebellion by introducing martial law, claim his defenders. He will therefore contest the charges in court, they tell the Korean news agency Yonhap.

Yoon Suk-Yeol is being investigated for having declared a state of emergency with accompanying martial law on December 3. He was forced to back down just a few hours later, after the parliament voted against his decision, but it still led to the country ending up in a political crisis. On Saturday, the parliament voted to bring the president to trial and he was suspended from his office.

However, according to one of Yoon Suk-Yeol's defenders, Seok Dong-Hyeon, his declaration of martial law was not an insurrection.

Although we do not believe that the charges of insurrection are legally valid, we will cooperate with the investigation, he says.

The statement comes shortly after reports that Yoon may be arrested if he does not appear for questioning on Saturday. The president and some of his inner circle risk life imprisonment or the death penalty if they are found guilty.
