The announcement of the pause in the implementation of the peace agreement came from Bangkok on Monday, when it became clear that two soldiers patrolling the border area had been injured.
The follow-up to the letter of intent that we have been working on for about a week is suspended, says government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat, adding that it also includes the release of 18 captured Cambodian soldiers.
The agreement on an extended ceasefire was signed at the end of October in the presence of US President Donald Trump, whose administration had previously mediated between the countries.
Relations between Thailand and Cambodia deteriorated in May, when a Cambodian soldier was shot dead in a cross-border exchange of fire. Regular fighting then broke out, before an initial ceasefire was agreed in August. However, the parties have clashed on several occasions since then.
