According to information from the Thai army, Cambodian soldiers had entered the current area. Thai soldiers approached them to negotiate, but due to a misunderstanding, the other side opened fire, which was returned.
In a statement by the Cambodian army's spokesperson Mao Phalla, it is stated that their soldiers were on a routine mission, patrolling the border when the Thai side opened fire.
The exchange of fire lasted for around ten minutes, until local commanders were able to put an end to it. There are no reported casualties.
It was not immediately disclosed where the exchange of fire took place. There are several disputed areas of land along the border between the two countries. The most well-known concerns the area around the thousand-year-old Preah Vihear temple, which is on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
