Texas residents will soon be able to sue individuals or companies that send abortion pills to anyone in the Republican-controlled state.

The House of Representatives in Austin has approved a bill proposal that is expected to get the green light in the Senate next week. Thereafter, Governor Greg Abbott is expected to sign it shortly.

The conservative Texas, like a number of other states, introduced very strict abortion laws in 2022, after the US Supreme Court overturned the decision that since 1973 guaranteed the right to abortion at the federal level. Currently, abortion is virtually totally banned in Texas, with very limited exceptions for the mother's life and health. No exceptions are made in cases where the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest.

However, medications for medical abortion are difficult for abortion opponents to access. Especially since the Supreme Court decided last year that the wide availability of abortion pills will remain in the country.

The local Texas law that is now to be passed prohibits the manufacture and distribution of abortion pills in Texas, even if the medication is transported from another state. A person who suspects such crimes can file a lawsuit for 100,000 dollars.

Corrected: In an earlier version, there was an incorrect wording regarding which pills it concerns.
