Over 30,000 Syrian citizens have returned to their home country from Turkey after the fall of the Assad regime.
The number of returnees is 30,663, said Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya to TV company TGRT on Friday. According to the minister, 30 percent of them were born in Turkey.
About three million Syrians are estimated to have fled to Turkey, a mass exodus that began when the civil war in Syria broke out in 2011.
The number of returnees has increased in recent days, with around 5,000 Syrians crossing the border in the last three days. Turkish authorities want to facilitate the return by establishing a migration office in the Syrian metropolis of Aleppo. According to current migration rules, those who return to their home country are allowed to visit Turkey three times during the first half of 2025, reports Turkish news agency Anadolu.
Turkey's embassy opened in Damascus on December 14.
