According to AFP journalists on the ground in the Mexican capital, protesting teachers tried to reach El Zócalo. There, in Mexico City's main square, there will be a fan zone during the World Cup where matches will be shown on a big screen.
The unrest began when protesters pushed through one of the metal fences erected at the entrance to El Zócalo, which is located just a block from the government palace.
Teachers in Mexico have previously announced that they will protest for fairer wages, better pensions and more secure jobs in connection with the World Cup, the New York Times wrote in May.
The World Cup, which will be played in Mexico, the United States and Canada, begins on June 11.
