Two silvers in Cortina and dominance in the World Cup this winter. No wonder this has become a big talking point at the Olympics: Why is Emma Aicher from Sundsvall competing for Germany? "It was a very brave thing to do," says Kira Weidle-Winkelmann.

The silver in Sunday's downhill race was followed up a few days later with another medal of that denomination, then in the team combination together with Weidle-Winkelmann.

She only has good things to say about the German-Swedish partnership.

"Emma is young, but she is already so successful. She is an incredible skier and a simple, calm person. We will have a lot of fun in the future. We are very happy that she chose Germany," says Weidle-Winkelmann, laughing.

“Then I stopped”

Did Swedish downhill skiing waste a huge talent? Emma Aicher doesn't think so. She was only 16 when she was invited to Germany. She liked the setup.

"And then I stayed. I moved in September 2020. My dad is German and I am half German, and it has always been an opportunity to compete for Germany."

"I was never in the (Swedish) federation team, and I'm very happy to be in the German team. They let me do everything, and my development has progressed in recent years."

Mother Viktoria Lindstrand Munkby has been celebrating her daughter's success in Cortina. Friends from Sundsvall have been in touch.

"Most people have been happy and congratulated me. I have many close friends at home. I don't have much time to hang out with them, but we keep in touch."

“All or nothing”

Aicher was aiming for a third consecutive medal in Thursday's super-G, but she crashed out early.

"At the Olympics it's all or nothing. Sometimes it goes well and sometimes not so well. I'm very happy with the first two competitions and I'll learn from this one," she says.

The next big thing is the giant slalom on Sunday, where Aicher could sabotage Sara Hector's attempt to win a second straight Olympic gold medal in the sport.

Whether the 22-year-old will start, Emma Aicher does not give a clear answer.

"I'll rest tomorrow and then we'll see what I do."

Your relationship with Hector?

"We compete against each other. I've seen her ski when I was younger. What she does is very impressive."
