Tanzania's incumbent president is staying in office and condemning the widespread election protests of recent days. After the country's rigged presidential election, which has led to the violent demonstrations, the electoral commission claims that she received 97.7 percent of the vote.

The election, which lacked major opposition candidates and which has degenerated into violent protests, received its final results from the country's electoral commission on Saturday morning.

"I declare Samia Suluhu Hassan elected president of the United Republic of Tanzania through the CCM party," said Electoral Commission Chairman Jacobs Mwambegele on state television.

Condemns the protests

Afterwards, Samia Suluhu Hassan thanked the country's security forces and condemned the protests.

"The government strongly condemns the violent incidents. These incidents were not patriotic at all," Hassan said during a winning ceremony on state television.

A spokesperson for the main opposition party Chadema says that Samia Suluhu Hassan's election victory is a "mockery of the democratic process."

"We demand that a credible body intervene to oversee a new election," said John Kitoka, according to AFP.

Kitoka adds that it is “a slap in the face of the people” and suggests that the party may call for new national protests.

Violence and chaos

Wednesday's election day derailed into chaos and violence, which has continued since. Crowds are furious at the fact that the president's main challengers have been either imprisoned or banned from participating, as well as at increased repression of government critics in general.

According to the opposition, 700 people have been killed in the violence.

The internet and many other communications have been shut down and it is difficult to follow what is happening. The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been advising against non-essential travel to Tanzania since Friday due to the security situation in the country.
