An explosion reportedly occurred when the tanker attempted to take a route through the strait not approved by Iran and hit a deployed naval mine, the Qatar-based channel writes.

Iranian authorities have warned against attempts to pass through the Strait of Hormuz without coordinating with the country.

Attacks between Iran and the United States have been paused over the weekend. President Donald Trump is said to have ordered a reduction in attacks on Iran to open the way for new talks. On Sunday evening, Iran's military said the country had stopped what it called retaliatory attacks on Washington's allies in the Middle East.

Iran's Foreign Ministry claimed on Monday that it is not participating in any negotiations with the United States, despite the fact that attacks between the parties have been scaled back, AFP reports.

"At this time, we are not involved in any negotiations with the US," spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei says.

He says that messages are being conveyed between the parties, but that no direct talks are taking place with the US.

Mediators led by Qatar and Pakistan are working to bridge the gap between the United States and Iran, according to two regional officials who told the AP they are seeing progress in the process.

One of the sources calls the mediation efforts “significant.”
