Thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes and schools have been closed in Taiwan, where they are waiting for the arrival of Typhoon Gaemi. It is feared to be "the strongest" to hit the island in eight years.
One person has already died and nearly 60 have been injured, according to the authorities.
Gaemi, with sustained winds of over 52 meters per second, is expected to reach Taiwan during the afternoon Swedish time. President Lai Ching-Te has urged the public to prioritize safety.
Through our joint efforts, I hope that the impact of the typhoon can be minimized … I also encourage citizens across the country not to go out unless necessary during the typhoon, especially not to dangerous places.
The storm has led to flooding and landslides in neighboring Philippines, where four people have died south of the capital Manila.
