The announcement comes after SVT's Uppdrag granskning reported that the Swedish Transport Administration is turning off road lighting in hundreds of villages.
In total, the Swedish Transport Administration has planned to remove 25,000 lighting poles in the coming years, according to the program. The agency has told SVT that at least as many lighting poles will be erected as are taken down, but under the criteria they will be in places with denser traffic and more residents.
The Swedish Transport Administration says in a press release that it is necessary to ensure thorough dialogue with municipalities and their residents. The process should be reviewed before any lighting is removed, except for lighting that poses a traffic or electrical safety risk.
