It's a troublesome back that's putting a stop to it. Wallberg started feeling problems after the latest World Championship competition in Bakuriani just before Christmas, where the Swede took the winter's only victory so far, in parallel mogul.
"Something happened after the trip home from Georgia, unclear what. Long trip and heavy luggage maybe", says Walter Wallberg in a press release.
The World Cup resumes in Waterville, USA, this weekend. Seven Swedish skiers will start, two ladies and five gentlemen, while Wallberg is forced to travel home to Sweden after feeling back pain during training.
It's far from the first injury that has plagued the reigning Olympic gold medalist in recent years.
It feels like there's always something. At the beginning of the season, it was my knees, then a heel after the World Cup in Idre that made me unable to train, and then I was sick in Georgia – although it went very well despite that. And now it's my back, says Wallberg to DN.
The World Cup stays in North America for the coming weeks with competitions also in Val St. Come, Canada, and Deer Valley, USA. The World Cup season ends then in the February-March shift with competitions in China, Kazakhstan, and finally the World Cup final in Italian Livigno.
After that, the season's highlight awaits: the freestyle World Championship in Swiss Engadin, where the mogul competitions will take place on 18-21 March.
For Wallberg, examinations and rehab await, but he's not worried about missing the World Championship.
It shouldn't be a problem, he says.
