Swedish referee criticism – point loss in Nations League

Magdalena Eriksson directed criticism at the Swiss chief referee Désirée Grundbacher after the points loss away against Wales in the Nations League football. I don't see how you can award a penalty in such a situation, says Sweden's team captain to SVT.

Sweden had the lead with 1-0 in Wrexham in the 74th match minute when Wales' right-back Ceri Holland put in a cross into Sweden's penalty area. Emma Kullberg and Kayleigh Barton ended up in a duel over the ball, which touched both players' hands. Swiss referee Désirée Grundbacher blew for a penalty for Wales and Barton then scored the equalizer, which became the final result, 1-1.

I'm incredibly disappointed that we only get one point from this match. I think we get our game going really well at times, create many chances and put pressure on them, says team captain Magdalena Eriksson to SVT.

Fridolina Rolfö, who decided with a beautiful goal in the 2-1 win in the Nations League premiere away against Denmark in Odense on Friday, was on the bench throughout the match. The attacking star's replacement Matilda Vinberg shot the shot that Filippa Angeldahl rebounded after a quarter of an hour in the first half.

No Rolfö

When it's 1-0, the match is alive, and then they get a penalty that I, from my perspective, think is very questionable. I think it touches both hands. It's frustrating that it's a situation like that which makes us drop points today, says Eriksson.

Sweden's national team coach Peter Gerhardsson did not want to criticize the Swiss referee team. Instead, he questioned why the assistant video referee system VAR was not implemented in the women's Nations League. Despite it being used in this summer's European Championship in Switzerland.

Sweden also conceded a penalty goal away against Denmark last time.

"Need to train"

We've had two penalties against us in these matches. I'm not a big fan of VAR, or at all. But if you're going to have it in the European Championship, I think everyone needs to train on it, both us and the VAR referees, says Gerhardsson to SVT.

World number five Sweden's unexpected point loss against Wales, ranked 30th in the world, made the standings in group A4 tighter. Denmark also beat Italy 3-1 earlier on Tuesday evening. Sweden tops the group with four points, followed by Denmark and Italy with three and Wales with one.

The group winner after six matches will advance to the Nations League finals at the end of the year. The next gathering is in April.
