In Sweden, the agreement covers the northern border municipalities of Haparanda, Övertorneå, Pajala and Kiruna, and the cooperation includes certain emergency interventions.
Finnish and Swedish police can now ask each other for help in emergency situations in border areas. In addition, both countries have the right to intervene directly in emergency situations, even without a formal request from the other country, if necessary to avert a serious threat to people's lives and physical well-being.
This is the first time that a foreign police patrol can independently carry out emergency missions in Finland, according to Yle.
