Sweden, like several other European NATO countries, has sent military personnel to Greenland, at the invitation of Denmark.
For Sweden, this involves a few staff officers who will gather information and assess conditions for participating in exercises in the Arctic region and Greenland, according to the Armed Forces.
It is a time-limited assignment, but there is no set date for returning home.
You are there to complete a task and you stay as long as necessary, says Nyström.
Since 2025, Sweden has been assigned a new area of operations within NATO, which includes the Arctic region as well as Greenland and the North Atlantic. The area is shared with the other Nordic countries.
In order for us to participate in exercises in that operational area, we need to be on site to familiarize ourselves with the unique conditions that exist there.
It's about getting acquainted with a new area of operations in which Sweden has not historically been particularly active, says Henrik Nyström.
The German government has previously announced that its reconnaissance is planned to continue until Saturday. On Sunday, German and Danish media reported that German forces were leaving the island.
