Joakim Medin had been sent to Turkey by Dagens ETC to monitor the development. Upon arrival in Istanbul on Thursday, he was arrested, and the newspaper's editor-in-chief Andreas Gustavsson told TV4 on Friday that Medin has been imprisoned.
Reporters Without Borders Sweden says in a comment that "it is indefensible to target those who try to tell what is happening".
"This is an attack not only on Joakim Medin, but on all of us. We have the right to know what is happening in Turkey", says the organization's chairman Erik Larsson.
"The reports of Joakim's detention are appalling. The threat to journalists is a threat to freedom of expression and concerns us all", says Amnesty Sweden's general secretary Anna Johansson in a comment.
"The government must act sharply"
The Swedish Newspaper Publishers' Association's CEO Johan Taubert believes that the Swedish government "must act sharply and swiftly" to ensure Medin's immediate release.
"Independent journalism is crucial for citizens to be informed, and Turkish authorities know this when they attack journalists. But that domestic and foreign media are not allowed to operate freely in Turkey is alarming", says Johan Taubert in a comment.
The industry organization Utgivarna calls the reports "alarming" and demands in a press release that Joakim Medin be released. Utgivarna also says that Turkish authorities must guarantee the safety of both foreign and domestic journalists.
"Utgivarna strongly condemns all attempts to silence free media in Turkey", writes Utgivarna's CEO Stefan Eklund in the press release.
International attention
Even news agencies AFP and AP, as well as Bloomberg, are paying attention to Joakim Medin's arrest.
Earlier in the week, a BBC journalist was expelled from Turkey. According to AP, around a dozen Turkish journalists have been detained in connection with the large protests in the country. The protests concern Istanbul's mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who was arrested on March 19, accused of corruption. Imamoglu is seen as the main challenger to Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has been in power for 22 years.
