Detroit's Swedish defenseman Simon Edvinsson, a bit of a hidden gem in NHL contexts, has gotten off to a thunderous start to the season.
When Detroit met Nashville on Saturday, local time, Edvinsson scored one of the goals in the 5–2 win. When Nashville pushed for an equalizer in the end of the third period, the Swedish defender got hold of the puck behind his own blue line and sent a shot that sailed across the entire rink – straight into Nashville's empty net. The goal meant 4–2 to Detroit with only a minute left, a lead that was soon extended by teammate Andrew Copp.
The goal means that Edvinsson has so far scored two points in five matches this season, one goal and one assist. A fine start for the Swede, who has now scored as many points in five matches as he did in the 16 he played last season. The season before that, he scored two points in nine matches.
Simon Edvinsson was drafted by Detroit as number six in 2021.
