The warning, the first step in a three-step warning system, was announced at a press conference with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) and the Swedish Energy Agency. It is based on an assessment from the Swedish Energy Agency.

We are in early warning when it comes to aviation fuel, and that means we have left the normal situation, says Caroline Asserup, Director General of the Swedish Energy Agency.

This is not an acute shortage situation, but an increased risk of shortage.

Risk of escalation

The reason is the conflict in the Middle East and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Even if the war ends quickly, it will take a while before the situation returns to normal.

The supply of aviation fuel is considered to be stable in Sweden today.

We do not see any interruptions to deliveries, says Asserup.

But Sweden and Europe could be affected if the conflict continues or escalates.

In a worst-case scenario, rationing could be considered in the long term. But that is a long way off and not here and now, says Asserup.

A corresponding risk of shortages of gasoline and diesel has not been identified, according to the authority.

There is a low probability of any form of rationing of gasoline or diesel, says Asserup.

The crisis now only concerns aviation fuel. Ebba Busch takes Italy as an example, where some consequences have already arisen.

At a couple of airports, they have not had access to as much aviation fuel as they need and have therefore had to prioritize certain departures over others.

Are you affected by the holidays?

Many people may now be wondering what this means for their vacations and any trips they have planned. The government's recommendation is to stay informed, especially when flying outside Europe, and to be aware that conditions can change. If things go badly, there could be problems getting home.

Ebba Busch emphasizes that it may be a good idea to review things like travel protection, insurance, and conditions for the trip.

But it is not a recommendation to refrain from traveling.

However, she makes a concession.

Don't book trips that require you to arrive home at a very specific time. It's good to think about having some margin for your trips if you end up in a situation like in Italy and have to go home on a different day.
