The Swedish Equestrian Federation pushed through a minimum age limit of 13 for participation in national and international competitions - and was criticized. Now the federation is backing down.

"We have listened to the criticism and concerns raised by our members regarding the process behind the decision. The issue of children competing is very important and we had good intentions, but the anchoring has not been sufficient. We now take responsibility for that," said chairwoman Sandra Ruuda in a statement on the association's website.

World stars such as Henrik von Eckermann, Peder Fredricson and Rolf-Göran Bengtsson have criticized the decision.

"The Swedish Equestrian Federation is now beginning a new effort to adapt the equestrian competition regulations to the Swedish Sports Federation's guidelines for children and youth sports," the federation said.
