Swedish Electricity Reserve Costs Rise Amid High Prices

Sweden's former electricity reserve, Karlshamnsverket, is out of the picture as a savior in need. But still not. The oil-fired power plant is ready and can indirectly still prevent extensive power outages. Only if the electricity price is high enough.

Svenska Kraftnät announced on Tuesday morning that they are canceling the procurement of a Swedish electricity reserve for the coming winter. The bids that came in were too low and the authority cannot pay more to have a preparedness according to the EU's state aid rules, is the message from the authority.

Thus, Sweden is left without reserve power if it becomes a strained winter. Ultimately, planned power outages in certain parts of Sweden are threatened, according to Svenska Kraftnät.

One of the bidders

Karlshamnsverket was one of the three bidders in Svenska Kraftnät's procurement, confirms the company to TT.

Björn Magnusson, communications manager at Karlshamnsverket's owner Sydkraft Thermal Power, says that of course they hope that the government, EU and Svenska Kraftnät can agree to review the regulations.

But regardless, Karlshamnsverket remains.

- We are preparing for a winter, whatever it may be, says Björn Magnusson.

Requires high electricity price

So Karlshamnsverket may be operated even if Svenska Kraftnät has nothing to say about it through an agreement on preparedness. The power plant has done so before.

Karlshamnsverket is not removed from the market, in the short term. We are where we are, we have staff and are technically ready to handle this, says Björn Magnusson.

But it requires a high electricity price, otherwise it will not be profitable to start production, according to Björn Magnusson.

How high, he does not want to say. It depends on several factors, fuel price, emission price and competitive situation.

But it is high electricity prices, we can certainly establish. Exactly how high, I cannot go into.
