"It's fantastic to be here. It's been a very long and messy production," von Bahr tells TT.

"The End" takes place at an airport and the film has an impressive collection of voices for the animated characters, including Alexander Skarsgård, Noomi Rapace, and Denis Lavant.

The film has taken four years to produce.

Stop motion is too damn hard. It's not fun, but it's magical. You can feel it in every frame.

Ten films

She visited Cannes with a previous film in 2017 and says it has been a goal to return.

It's hard to get good exposure with short films. This might increase interest. And you want to show off what you've done.

Niki Lindroth von Bahr says she's not a "giant nerd when it comes to animation," but that her interest in film and narrative, combined with her artistry, has made her hooked on stop motion. She hasn't yet seen any of the nine competing films. Instead, she'll have to wait until Friday when all ten will be shown in one go.

"Damn project"

How does von Bahr feel about her chances of winning? Well...

After the festival, work will begin on seeking financing for what will become a stop-motion feature film.

It's a really cool project. A humorous thriller that contains a brutal financial critique.
