The increase is due, among other things, to "infrastructure investments and variations in the activities of authorities between the years", according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The change in the reduction obligation for fuel as of January 1 also has an impact, according to the authority.

On the other hand, emissions from long-distance flights – over 50 miles – decreased by eight percent last year compared to 2023, according to the Environmental Protection Agency's report.

"The authorities are working systematically to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from business travel and now it has yielded results in emission reductions from long-distance flights, which is good for climate work", says the Environmental Protection Agency's Director-General Johan Kuylenstierna in a press release.

The report is based on information from 187 government authorities.
