Swedes Seek Sun Escapes as Rain Drives Last-Minute Travel Surge

The rain in Sweden makes more people choose the warmth by the Mediterranean, and last minute trips are selling out quickly. It goes up naturally very much when the weather fails, says Martina Krantz, press spokesperson at Apollo, about the booking pressure.

During the summer, record heat has been measured in parts of southern Europe, but in Sweden, the real summer heat has been absent. The recent rainfall has made an impact on the charter companies' sales figures.

The last week we have seen the largest increases in bookings to Turkey, the Greek island of Zakynthos and Cyprus, says Dian Martinez Valencia, communications manager at Tui.

Apollo has noted an increase in sales of 20 percent over the last two weeks compared to the previous weeks, and 15 percent compared to the same period last year. The competitor Tui has seen a doubling of last-minute bookings over the last two weeks compared to previous weeks.

There are fewer places left in general compared to the same week a year ago, says Dian Martinez Valencia.

It's almost full flights all the time now, so there are only scattered seats left, says Martina Krantz.

The destinations that are left for Apollo include, among others, Rhodes, Crete and the Epirus area on the Greek mainland. Tui also has scattered trips left to the Greek islands of Rhodes and Crete, but there are also last-minute trips left to Cyprus, Bulgaria and Turkey.

If you're not so particular about exactly where you want to go and exactly which hotel, then there are a few trips left, says Martina Krantz.
