Program items alternated throughout the day. After a thanksgiving service in the Royal Palace Church, there was a rowing trip on the royal sloop Vasaorden along Stockholm's waterways, a horse-drawn carriage procession through central Stockholm, and a concert in the name of love at Kungsträdgården.

Spectators lined up along the parade route in central Stockholm to pay tribute to the couple.

The King and Queen are doing a great job with that honor, I think, and you can tell on a day like this how incredibly popular they are, says Gunilla Sandberg, who is in Kungsträdgården together with Kerstin Gustafsson.

To celebrate the day, they each wore a sparkling tiara.

We had them at Victoria's wedding too, they say.

But in 1976, both had small children at home and were able to watch the wedding on TV.

We will not forget that day.

Looking forward to Victoria

Helena and Hasse Gustafsson, who had just watched the rowers struggle in the wind outside Skeppsbron, also gave the royal couple their approval.

The king is a good representative of Sweden and the queen is charming, even though she could have learned Swedish a little better after so many years, says Helena.

But we are looking forward to Victoria. I believe she can do a lot to strengthen the monarchy among the younger generation.

The family on site

The entire royal family attended the morning thanksgiving service, with the exception of Princess Estelle, who is abroad on a language trip. Also present were Princess Benedikte of Denmark, Princess Takamado of Japan, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Speaker Andreas Norlén and other representatives from official Sweden.

Norway's royal couple, Harald and Sonja, are also in Stockholm for the celebration, but for health reasons they will not participate in all program items.

The circle closes

The festivities conclude with a golden wedding anniversary concert at the Royal Swedish Opera - and thus the circle can be said to be closed.

It was during a live gala at the opera the night before the wedding in 1976 that Abba sang "Dancing Queen" for the first time and Kjerstin Dellert made the king both laugh out loud and blush with the revue couplet "O, min Carl Gustaf".

Since the actual wedding day, June 19 this year, falls on Midsummer Eve, the festivities have been brought forward by almost a week.
