Sweden Bounces Back with 5-1 Victory Over Northern Ireland

Useless one day, brilliant the next. The national football team under Jon Dahl Tomasson's management is inconsistent and unpredictable. Four days after the fiasco against Luxembourg, it was a blast – 5–1 against Northern Ireland.

The Danish national team captain was pleased to have seen a completely different Swedish team compared to the loss in Luxembourg.

I saw a brilliant Sweden. Five different goal scorers, we followed the principles, played with one and two touches, played forward and with runs behind, says Jon Dahl Tomasson to Viaplay.

We are satisfied. The players did an excellent job.

With Alexander Isak – forward and goal scorer – at their disposal, the national team has a world-class player who instills fear in any opponent. It took seven minutes before he once again showed why he is one of football's hottest names.

Isak teased Northern Ireland's right defense, turned, twisted, and shook off three opponents. The opening pass left Emil Holm clear at the far post. A distinct finish and the national team got the start they wanted to shake off the unpleasant feeling from the 0-1 loss against Luxembourg.

Sema's big night

Otherwise, it was Ken Sema's night. A lot happened on his left flank. Fast, dribbling-willing, and – most importantly – he often got past his opponent and caused trouble with his crosses and passes.

The move from Watford to Pafos on Cyprus has not had a negative impact on his qualities as a player. Sema's 26th appearance in the national team was one of his most successful.

National team captain Dahl Tomasson got another confirmation that the 31-year-old has what it takes when it's time to decide on a World Championship squad in the fall.

Nygren's astonishing week

It's less than a week since Benjamin Nygren, normally in Danish Nordsjælland, was called up to the squad.

The substitute appearance on Saturday was followed four days later by a starting spot. Few can say they've gone from relative unknown to national team celebrity in such a short time.

But Dahl Tomasson knew what he was doing when he chose Nygren over Anthony Elanga or Gustaf Nilsson.

Nygren crowned his starting debut with the 2-0 goal. The excellent Sema found Gabriel Gudmundsson in depth. On the pass slanted inward, Nygren scored his first national team goal.

It's a dream to just make my debut and to score my first goal feels wonderful. I'm extremely happy with my performance, says Nygren to Viaplay.

Nygren was close to 3-0 but Pierce Charles saved the left-footed shot. Then he hit the post on Sebastian Nanasi's free kick.

The return was scored by Sema.

Isak scored 4-0, substitute Elanga 5-0 before Isaac Price reduced.

Melker Widell got his debut with a late substitute appearance when the national team restored a lost reputation.

The national team will next meet Hungary in a friendly match in Budapest on June 6. Another friendly match – this time at home – is planned during the gathering in June.

The World Championship qualifying matches in the fall will be played as follows for Sweden's part:

September 5: Slovenia–Sweden (20.45)

September 8: Kosovo–Sweden (20.45)

October 10: Sweden–Switzerland (20.45)

October 13: Sweden–Kosovo (20.45)

November 15: Switzerland–Sweden (20.45)

November 18: Sweden–Slovenia (20.45)
