The agreement with the local mayor and the Cherson region has been signed by Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa (M) during his visit to Kyiv on Thursday.
It is truly an area that has been severely affected by Russian terror. This is a clear intention to show that Sweden wants to be part of building something so that everyone who previously lived in Gammalsvenskby can return to the village they love and come from, says Dousa over the phone from Ukraine.
The declaration of intent is primarily to confirm Sweden's continued long-term commitment. No exact sums are mentioned yet.
Gammalsvenskby was created in the late 18th century by inhabitants who were relocated from the Swedish-speaking Dagö in then Russian-ruled Estonia. The village is located in southern Ukraine, on the western side of the Dnepr River, and has been severely damaged by the war.
