A challenge for airports is to take care of emissions from, for example, de-icing agents, anti-skid agents and fire-fighting foam that risk affecting groundwater and watercourses. Now, researchers in water and sewage technology at Luleå University of Technology will collaborate with Swedavia on sustainable water management, the university writes in a press release.
All of Swedavia's ten airports are included in the collaboration and Arlanda is the first to be investigated. The researchers will evaluate how the runoff from the airport affects surface water and groundwater in the vicinity.
Sweden will be the first in Europe to make such a comprehensive mapping.
”Swedavia has ambitious goals when it comes to reducing pollution in stormwater that runs out from their airports and here we contribute with our internationally leading scientific expertise in the field”, says Maria Viklander, professor of water and sewage technology, in a comment.
