Sweden's Supreme Commander Michael Claesson does not rule out that the Swedish military may end up in situations where they have to shoot down intruding aircraft. It is the pilot in the plane who has to make that decision, he says in SVT's "Agenda".

A number of violations of NATO countries' airspace have occurred recently and in Denmark, there have been alarms about drones over airports and defense facilities. That Sweden would also be affected by similar intrusions is a "fully possible development", according to Claesson.

It cannot be ruled out, he says in the program.

He also does not rule out that it may become relevant for the defense to shoot down planes that violate Swedish airspace.

It always depends on the situation, but as a last resort, it may become relevant to use military force to first mark, secondly shoot down. It is the pilot in the plane who must make that decision.

He describes the security situation as deteriorated and that the risk of Russian violations has increased – on the other hand, he does not believe that Russia wants to wage war against NATO.

The provocations aim to cause political division between NATO countries, but they do not want to go to war with NATO. They want to create uncertainty and fear among our populations.
