Karlsson shot 3–2 to Vegas in the second period, after elegantly passing back and forth with teammate Noah Hanifin. Vegas had then caught up a 0–2.
With just over three minutes left in the third, however, a real cold shower awaited the visitors, who skated out onto the ice with 0–2 in matches in their luggage, when Connor McDavid equalized for Edmonton.
Everything spoke in favor of overtime when Karlsson, with just seconds left, succeeded in pinching the puck behind Edmonton's cage and passing it to Reilly Smith, who elegantly deceived both defender and goalkeeper and scored 4–3 when the clock showed 19.59.
With the win, Vegas reduced the match series, which is decided in best of seven, to 1–2.
In the second quarterfinal played during the night against Sunday, Carolina outclassed visiting Washington with 4–0 and Carolina now leads the match series with 2–1.
