With just over six minutes left in the second period, Sundqvist was left lying in the center zone in severe pain.
It followed a hard tackle from Meier.
The referees reacted immediately and signaled a sending-off before going to review the situation on video to determine whether the Swiss should receive a match penalty.
However, the decision stopped at a two-minute penalty for cross-checking.
"I think it should have been more than two minutes," Jörgen Jönsson told Radiosporten during the second period break.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson was also injured, and both missed the third period.
National team captain Sam Hallam had to bite his tongue after the match when he talked about the break.
"I'm going to be careful now. Until now you put it aside, but it's clear that they (the referees) do their job and we do ours. But I'm not super happy with myself all the time either," Hallam told Viaplay and continued:
"It is what it is. It's really unfortunate."
He doesn't deny that the injuries affected the rest of the match.
"It's clear. We lose our team captain and our first power-play defenseman," Hallam said.
Switzerland won the quarter-final 3–1.
