Rishi Sunak unexpectedly announced an election in July last year. But it was no news to several of the then British Prime Minister's employees who are now being prosecuted for having made money on the announcement at betting companies.

14 close colleagues of Rishi Sunak, as well as at least one of the then Prime Minister's bodyguards, are being prosecuted by the British equivalent of the Gaming Inspection.

The Conservative Party was far behind the Labour Party in opinion polls and was expected to wait until the last minute to announce the election, which had to take place no later than December 2024.

But Sunak chose to call an election as early as July 4. With the help of insider information, they could, with knowledge of the Prime Minister's plans, make a profit at the betting companies. Sunak lost the election and was forced to resign.

Sunak's close colleague Craig Williams, who also sat in the House of Commons, has admitted to betting 100 pounds on the correct election date just days before the election was announced.

"It was reckless of me, but not a crime, and I want to apologize", says Williams in a social media post.

CORRECTED: The prosecuted politician is named Craig Williams. In an earlier version, he was given an incorrect first name.
