"Our forces continued to achieve success last night and eliminated hundreds of militiamen who tried to flee through central Khartum," says the army's spokesperson Nabil Abdallah in a statement to AFP.
This comes a day after the army took control of the presidential palace in the capital Khartum. The palace has been held by the paramilitary force Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since the ongoing civil war broke out in April 2023.
The military has made steady progress in recent months, including the recapture of an important refinery north of Khartum.
Meanwhile, RSF is focusing on controlling the Darfur province in the western part of the country.
In an attack in the town of al-Malhar in North Darfur, at least 45 civilians were killed by RSF militiamen, according to a local activist group.
"According to a preliminary list of the massacre victims," 15 of the deceased were not identified, said the movement, which calls itself a resistance committee.
The information has not been confirmed by independent sources.
The commander of RSF in the Darfur region said on Thursday that their forces had taken the town of al-Malha. In a statement, RSF said they had "surrounded the enemy – and left more than 380 dead" in al-Malha.
Sudan is currently essentially divided into two parts: Sudan's army controls the northern and eastern parts, while RSF has taken large parts of western and southern Sudan, including the Darfur region.
