”More than two thousand unarmed civilians, mostly women, children and the elderly, were murdered on the 26th and 27th of October, before everyone's eyes. It is a shocking sight for all of humanity”, states the Sudanese military and allied groups in a statement published on their official Facebook account, reports the news agency EFE.
RSF has not commented on the allegations, which have not been verified by independent sources, but the concern for the civilian population's situation is great in the outside world.
UN warns of atrocities
RSF claimed on Sunday full control over the city of al-Fashir. On Monday, the Sudanese military announced that it had gone into full retreat.
The UN has warned that the risk of further "large-scale, ethnically motivated abuses and atrocities in al-Fashir increases every day", while researchers at Yale University state that they have seen evidence with the help of satellite images that RSF has carried out massacres after taking the city.
”Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commits a new horrific crime in the city of al-Fashir, documented video clips show its members carrying out mass executions of civilians and prisoners from the army and allied groups. They have been killed in cold blood in shocking and repeated scenes throughout the city”, writes the organization Emergency Lawyers, which monitors violence against people in the country, in a statement sent to TT.
AU suspects war crimes
The leader of the African Union, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expresses on Tuesday "deep concern over the escalating violence and the reported atrocities". In a statement on X he condemns "alleged war crimes and ethnically targeted murders of civilians", reports AFP.
The completely neutral International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said in a statement on Tuesday that employees have been killed in Bara in the Kordofan region where fierce battles continue to be fought between the paramilitary RSF and the Sudanese army.
”The employees were clearly identifiable as they wore Red Cross vests, which should give them full protection, and they wore ID cards issued by the local Red Cross. All attacks on our employees are unacceptable”, writes ICRC.
The Kordofan region is located next to Darfur, in central Sudan. The area has been exposed to fierce battles between the militia RSF and the Sudanese army.
