The UN Secretary-General António Guterres personally called the Sudanese junta leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and asked for a humanitarian ceasefire in the war-torn oasis city of al-Fashir (El Fasher).

The city, which is located about 80 miles southwest of Khartum, is under military control but has been regularly attacked by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Burhan has agreed to the proposal, but RSF's response is unclear. It is also not established when the ceasefire can begin.

We have a dramatic situation in al-Fashir, said Guterres to reporters on Friday.

The war in Sudan began in April 2023 when the conflict between the army and RSF broke out and spread across the country. More than 20,000 people have been killed and over 14 million have been displaced from their homes. Sudan is often described as the largest humanitarian disaster in the world.
