On Friday, four countries, including the USA, urged a ceasefire between the army – which has control over most government institutions – and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The countries also proposed a nine-month transition to civilian rule.
Sudan's Foreign Ministry says it welcomes the countries' efforts, but criticizes the forms of the proposed transfer of power. It says it does not accept "interference" that does not respect the Sudanese state's "right to defend its people and its country".
The conflict in the country has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced millions and created what the UN describes as one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt stand together with the USA behind the proposal for a ceasefire.
