Skarsgård continues:
"It's incredibly funny that a Scandinavian film has received so much attention and that it is still selling to full houses in cinemas."
The 74-year-old previously won a Golden Globe for his role in the TV series Chernobyl. But Skarsgård did not expect to win a second time, as he felt he was "too old," NBC News reports.
The Golden Globes are widely seen as the second most prestigious awards ceremony in Hollywood. With the upcoming Oscar nominations, many have tipped Skarsgård as the winner.
"It's such a small chance. No Swedish man has ever won. The closest is Max von Sydow, who has at least been nominated," the star replies.
Skarsgård is now spending a few more days in the US before heading straight to Berlin on Friday for this year's European Film Academy Awards, where he has the opportunity to win the award for best actor.
The Oscar nominations will be presented on January 22.
Skarsgård wasn't the only Swede to be honored at the gala. Composer Ludwig Göransson was awarded a Golden Globe for the music for the vampire film "Sinners." He was nominated in two categories.
As recently as last week, Göransson won an award at the Critics' Choice Awards for the film's music.
