For Spain's part, the return match against the Netherlands began comfortably when Mikel Oyarzabal scored 1-0 on a penalty as early as the eighth minute. Then, however, it became a seesaw match where the teams scored each other's goals, including one in extra time.
In the end, Spain drew the longest straw in the penalty shootout and won the match 4-3.
At Stade de France in Paris, France, who lost the first quarterfinal against Croatia 0-2, were forced to win the return match by at least two goals to at least achieve an extension.
With that pressure on them, the French were likely not satisfied when the scoreboard at halftime showed 0-0. But early in the second half, Michael Olise showed the way when he scored 1-0, and with ten minutes left of regular time, Ousmane Dembele could arrange 2-0.
After a goalless extra time, Dayot Upamecano finally got the honor of scoring the winning penalty in the seventh round.
The semifinal between Spain and France will be played on June 5.
