South Korea's former president Yoon Suk-Yeol apologizes for causing the country to suffer by imposing martial law in 2024, several media outlets report.

Yoon was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday for rebellion in a trial involving martial law.

"I apologize to the people for the frustration and hardship I have caused them due to my own shortcomings, despite my determination to save the nation," Yoon Suk-Yeol said in a statement, according to AFP.

He is expected to appeal the life sentence.
