Andy Burnham - who has been described as Starmer's rival and challenger - secured a seat in the British House of Commons this week, paving the way for a fight for the position as Labour Party leader and, by extension, the role of prime minister.
According to Sky News, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper is calling on Starmer to resign. Cooper is one of Starmer's most experienced ministers and is said to have delivered her message to the Prime Minister over the weekend.
Trump's speech
In a post on Truth Social on Sunday afternoon, US President Donald Trump wrote that "Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom," and continued:
"He failed miserably on two important issues: migration and energy." It is unclear what Trump is basing his prediction on.
Conflicting statements
The country's business minister, Peter Kyle, said in an interview with Sky News on Sunday that the prime minister is spending the weekend "taking time to reflect" on political realities, challenges and opportunities. But Kyle said he had no reason to believe Starmer would resign, contradicting widespread reports.
According to several British media outlets, Keir Starmer is approaching a decision to resign. According to sources who told The Observer, Starmer has concluded that his "position is no longer tenable" based on conversations with ministers, donors and union leaders in recent days. A senior government official told The Telegraph that Starmer realizes that "the game is over."
