A bridge to Sicily can help Italy reach Nato's new budget target. At least Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani thinks that it should be possible to count the construction cost as an investment of benefit also for the military.

The question is just whether Nato also agrees.

"Do you really think Nato would buy that the bridge would have a strategic significance?" asks a Nato official in a comment to the news site Politico Europe.

The bridge to Sicily is estimated to cost up to 150 billion kronor. In Nato's new budget target, the countries are to annually allocate an amount that is at least equivalent to 3.5 percent of GDP for traditional defense expenditures, but also invest 1.5 percent in things of military benefit – such as bridges, roads and civil defense.
