The English football club Sheffield Wednesday has applied to be declared bankrupt due to extensive financial problems. The bottom team in the Championship will now be penalized with a deduction of twelve points.

Several English media outlets are reporting on the bankruptcy application that the club – where Swede Svante Ingelsson plays – has submitted.

Already last summer, it became known that players and other employees did not receive their salary on time and according to Sky Sports, the club has a tax debt of around twelve and a half million kronor (one million pounds).

Sheffield Wednesday played in the top division for most of the 1990s with Swedes such as Roland Nilsson, Niclas Alexandersson and Klas Ingesson on the team. The club has not played in the Premier League since the team was relegated in the spring of 2000.

The team is currently bottom in the English second division with 6 points. In the event of bankruptcy, a deduction of 12 points awaits, which would mean that the team would have 15 points up to safe ground according to the current table position.

The league organization EFL (English football league) has previously punished Sheffield Wednesday through, for example, transfer bans.

Dejphon Chansiri has been the owner since March 2015 and last summer, the Thai businessman stated that he was willing to sell the club.
