Adoptions to Sweden from abroad have decreased sharply since the turn of the millennium. The number of children adopted is now fewer than 100 a year, according to Statistics Sweden.

The report from Statistics Sweden (SCB) shows that around 14,700 children aged 0–17 were adopted into Sweden in the years 2000–2024.

The highest figure was in 2004, when 1,100 children came to Sweden via international adoptions. However, the number has gradually decreased.

"Over the past 20 years, the number of international adoptions has decreased and in 2024, only around 60 children were adopted from abroad," says Dalia Hamdan, demographer at Statistics Sweden, in a press release.

The most common type of adoption in Sweden is adult adoption. This usually involves a person adopting their partner's adult children.
