A severe heat wave is descending this week, several weeks earlier than the heat usually strikes at its worst.
The temperatures are expected to rise to levels not measured since the end of May since 1950, according to the Meteorological Institute AEMET. Where it will be warmest, they can reach "over ten degrees above normal for this time of year, especially in parts of the north, east, and south".
In Andalusia in southern Spain, the mercury will reach around 40 degrees. AEMET spokesperson Ruben del Campo says that a Spanish heat record cannot be ruled out.
The last three years have been the warmest measured in Spain.
