Even though economic issues have moved higher on the agenda in recent years - during inflationary crises and interest rate hikes - many people still shy away from discussing the topic at home.

We are generally quite bad at talking about finances, says Magnus Hjelmér, everyday economist at Icabanken.

A new survey from Verian commissioned by the bank also shows that nearly a third (29 percent) of Swedes do not think their partner should know everything about their finances.

Feeling of infidelity

According to Hjelmér, the basis should be that a couple shares common costs, but that the individual is then allowed to decide over their own assets. The "own freedom" around money is also important, even in a relationship.

You should be able to choose whether you want to save or spend. But you shouldn't keep money hidden. It gives the impression that you're not being honest.

Hiding assets or avoiding conversations about money often leads to deep conflicts. According to the survey, tolerance for secrets is low: 55 percent of women and 39 percent of men say they would consider leaving the relationship if their partner were not honest about credit debts.

Still, there is a fairly large proportion who would consider leaving for that very reason, says Magnus Hjelmér, and he adds:

Finances, and we know this from previous surveys, are one of the most common reasons for arguments in a relationship - but also for separation.

Make a new plan

Talking about money - and doing it often - is Hjelmér’s advice. He emphasizes the importance of sitting down and reassessing the situation when life changes, whether it’s due to illness, unemployment or having children. This is where the greatest potential for improvement lies.

In major, life-changing situations, you need to talk about the big picture of your finances.

The survey was conducted by Verian on behalf of Icabanken. Approximately 1,000 people aged 18-79 were randomly recruited and interviewed between January 9 and 16, 2026.
